The nights are long and the weather is cold, so it's almost guaranteed that you'll be reaching for the thermostat over the next few weeks. But is your home keeping the heat in as well as it could be?

Good loft insulation is an essential part of keeping your home as warm as possible, as a quarter of heat is lost through the roof of a house without insulation. It's also one of the cheapest ways to improve the energy efficiency of a property – but despite this, approximately 7.4 million people in the UK either have insufficient levels of loft insulation or don't have any at all. The recommended amount of insulation is 270mm, a big increase from the previous standard of 100mm that many people will have had installed.

That's why Changeworks is encouraging residents in our local project areas (Change Works in Burntisland, Change Works in Argyll, Change Works in Peebles, Change Works in Penicuik and the Edinburgh Old Town Energy Project) to measure how much insulation they have, and send us their findings. By completing the survey, you'll be on the way to getting your insulation replaced or topped up if it's needed – and you'll see an improvement on your heating bills and how warm your home feels.

That's not all though – one lucky person in each project area will receive up to £300 of insulation for free just for completing the survey. If you've already got the required levels of insulation, there's a £50 shopping voucher up for grabs too.

So what are you waiting for? If you live in one of the following areas, fill in the survey to be in with a chance of winning:
