How to choose an installer
Find out how to choose a trusted installer for energy efficiency or renewable upgrades
Installers for energy efficiency improvements
For all energy efficiency improvements, consider choosing a Trustmark registered installer. The Trustmark quality scheme is endorsed by the government.
To make sure you’re getting the best value, it’s also a good idea to get at least three quotes from different installers.
Insulation
For insulation measures, choose installers who are members of the National Insulation Association (NIA) or other recognised trade associations or guarantee schemes.
You can use the NIA’s website to find an installer near you.
With any type of insulation you should check that your installer is taking ventilation into account. This will help you avoid any issues with damp or mould.
Cavity Wall Insulation
If you’re considering cavity wall insulation, choose a Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency (CIGA) registered installer.
Solid Wall Insulation
For external or internal wall insulation, make sure the installer offers a 25-year guarantee. This will be backed by an insurance company or come from the Solid Wall Insulation Guarantee Agency (SWIGA).
Installers for renewable technology
For renewables like solar panels and heat pumps, choose an installer that’s Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certified. This is a quality mark to give you confidence in your renewable system.
You can also use the MCS website to find a renewable installer near you.
Energy storage systems
For energy storage systems like solar pV batteries and heat batteries, check your installer is:
- MCS certified for the system your battery connects to
- A member of the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) accredited consumer code
- Fully trained by the system’s manufacturer and meets all their guidelines
- Following the Institute for Engineering and Technology‘s code of practice (this only applies to electric batteries).
