As the Highland winds start to bite, keeping your home warm without skyrocketing energy bills can feel impossible. But in late October, Transition Black Isle (TBI) showed just how much local communities can achieve when they come together.
Learning from Local Experiences
Hosted as part of TBI’s work with the Highland Energy Community Partnership (HECP), the event brought residents together to share practical tips, personal stories, and encouragement. With rural homes often tricky to heat and fuel costs rising, the goal was simple: help Highland households improve energy efficiency and learn what really works.
Inspiring Stories from Your Neighbours
The evening featured three guest speakers sharing real-life experiences:
- Maggie Dove: Transformed her 19th-century cottage with draught-proofing and secondary glazing.
- Julie Gibson: Upgraded her 1990s bungalow with solar panels and modern electric heating.
- David Brims: Kept his 1930s semi-detached warm for eight years using an air source heat pump and extra insulation — all without higher energy bills.
Home Energy Scotland also offered guidance on funding options, energy reports, and advice for residents and community groups.
Community, Coffee, and Cosy Comfort
After the talks, attendees enjoyed home-baked treats, refreshments, and a free prize draw — with one lucky winner taking home a luxury heated throw.
Claire Divine, TBI Community Energy Officer, summed it up:
“It was wonderful to see so many people come together to share ideas, experiences, and encouragement. Even small steps make a big difference when we support one another.”
What’s Next for TBI?
The project is just getting started. Over the coming months, TBI will:
- Host energy drop-in sessions and community events
- Offer home visits for energy and retrofit advice
- Partner with schools, community groups, and local services
- Connect with tradespeople interested in renewable energy and retrofitting
- Gather case studies to shape a future area-based retrofit scheme
