Green Energy Helpline: Supporting James

Our Green Energy Helpline advisors are on hand to support with advice on renewable technology, insulation, smart meters, energy tariffs, electric vehicles and more.

Supporting James*

James was referred to the Green Energy Helpline by Changeworks’ Affordable Warmth Services team. He wanted to find out which other renewable technologies he could add to the systems he already had in his home, and whether any funding might be available.

Helping James with his solar panels

Our advisor phoned to find out more about James’s situation. During the call, James explained that he already had solar panels and battery storage in his property. He wanted to increase his system’s capacity by installing another battery.

The advisor signposted James to the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). MCS sets standards for both renewable products and the professionals who install them. Using the MCS database, James could search confidently for an accredited local installer with whom he could discuss the expansion of his battery system.

Going the extra mile

Next, the Green Energy Helpline advisor and James looked at other renewable technologies for James’s home. They discussed the property’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), which James agreed to have a closer look at after the call. They also talked about switching to an air source heat pump when James’s boiler reaches the end of its life, how to use a smart meter in-home display to track energy use, and funding for hybrid electric vehicles (EVs).

The Green Energy Helpline advisor referred James to Home Energy Scotland to explore funding for solar thermal panels and floor insulation. James also decided to register his interest in a used-EV loan scheme.
