Background
Previous research from Changeworks looked at how energy advice is currently delivered during the low-carbon retrofit of social housing. The research showed that the advice tenants receive about their new systems is often fragmented, overly technical, and sometimes contradictory. As a result, many tenants struggle to use these new technologies effectively.
Building on these findings, the latest guide makes practical recommendations for providing effective energy advice throughout the entire retrofit journey.
Key advice
To be effective, energy advice must be treated as a core part of low-carbon technology projects.
Advice should be:
- Timely: provided at key intervals throughout the installation process
- Practical: focussed on how tenants use systems day-to-day
- Tenant-centred: tailored to household needs, concerns and motivations
- Coordinated: agreed across landlords, installers and advice providers
Changeworks provide a step-by-step guide for delivering advice so it meets tenant’s needs at each stage of the project: pre-install, during installation, and once installation is complete.
The guide also includes wider recommendations for actions at a national level. These relate to funding models, consistent training, and collaboration networks.
