Households in Scotland can apply for £300 through the new Emergency Heating Oil scheme. The fund is for people who are struggling to afford heating oil and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).

What is the Emergency Heating Oil Scheme?

The Scottish Government has launched a fund to help households who are struggling with the rising price of heating oil and LPG.

As a result of conflict in the Middle East, the costs of heating oil and LPG are currently very high. This is particularly an issue in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, where many households rely on this type of fuel to heat their homes.

Advice Direct Scotland will run the scheme. It is likely to last for six months and people can apply twice during this period.

How much can I get through the Emergency Heating Oil Scheme?

Households in Scotland can apply for £300 from the fund, and people can apply every three months.

The scheme is scheduled to close in September 2026, so if you are eligible you can apply twice. For example, you could apply once in April and again in July.

Who can get the payment?

You can apply to the fund if you meet the following conditions:

  • You heat your home with oil or LPG
  • You pay the fuel costs for your home
  • The home is your main or only home
  • You bought fuel on or after 1 April 2026 OR you are about to place an order
  • No-one in your household has used the fund in the last three months.

The fund will focus on supporting low income households, including those in receipt of means-tested benefits. You might also get a payment if you are in financial hardship and have a vulnerability.

How do I apply to the Emergency Heating Oil Scheme?

You can apply online at homeheatingadvice.scot.

You can also call 0800 048 7413, but lines are expected to be very busy, so apply online if you can.
