Tenant Energy Support (TES) is a one-of-a-kind energy advice service for housing association tenants.
TES provides comprehensive energy information, advice and advocacy to help tenants manage their energy at home.
Tenants can access a range of in-person, online and over the phone energy advice and support. This includes advice on solving common billing issues, using heating systems efficiently, and saving energy at home.
This support is vital in the social housing sector, where 61% of households are in fuel poverty and 32% in extreme fuel poverty.
Currently over 20,000 tenants across Scotland have access to this advice.
Tenants say they feel warmer at home and more confident in handling their energy matters:
- 53% of tenants now feel warmer in their home, compared to 32% before the service launched
- 69% of tenants now feel confident dealing with energy issues, compared to 35% before the service launched
- 88% of tenants have learnt to deal with energy issues from our advisors’ expertise
Tenant Energy Support Service: meeting local need
Whilst national in scope, Tenant Energy Support has been designed to tailor support to meet local needs and concerns. This is evident in our work with Almond Housing Association.
Increased tenant confidence
What makes our Tenant Energy Support service unique is that rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach, the service is guided by local needs.
By working closely with partners, our expert energy advisors respond to tenants’ specific concerns by running events tailored to these needs. By providing focussed talks and a space for questions, as well as access to more in-depth support and advocacy where needed, housing associations can ensure positive outcomes for their tenants.
This helps tenants to stay more affordably warm at home, and increase their knowledge and confidence to manage their own home energy.
Additionally, as part of the service, housing associations will have access to a personal real-time dashboard that showcases the carbon and financial savings made by tenants.
What do tenants think of the service?
Tenants have responded well to the service and the quality of the advice they have been given, giving the following feedback:
“[The advisor] has been really helpful, prepared to listen to me and understanding. He provided me with as much support as I could have wanted.”
“In a three-way phone conversation with my supplier, [the advisor] was absolutely marvellous. I’d reached the point where I no longer had the patience with the energy company, [the advisor] took over and spoke to them on my behalf to get the issue sorted.”
“We covered all sorts of issues and [the advisor] was really easy to talk to. She was non-judgemental and really nice.”
What do housing association partners think of the service?
“Changeworks’ Tenant Energy Service has been an invaluable partner in supporting our tenants with practical, tailored energy advice. Their expert guidance has helped residents feel more confident in managing their energy use, reducing costs, and creating warmer, more comfortable homes.”
