Our story

For nearly 40 years we’ve worked alongside the Scottish Government, local authorities and communities to help households across Scotland to lower their carbon emissions and tackle the climate emergency.  This is how we got here:

1987

Heatwise, formerly known as Lothian Energy Group, was incorporated. The group was set up to advise and install energy efficiency measures in fuel poor households.

1990

Renamed as Lothian and Edinburgh Environmental Partnership (LEEP), with Edinburgh District Council, Friends of the Earth Scotland and the Centre for Human Ecology as members.

1990s

The Lothian and Borders Energy Efficiency Network was created, alongside ‘green’ businesses like Edinburgh City Car Club, Edinburgh City Cycle Couriers and Nappy Days.

2006

Now operating across Scotland, LEEP is rebranded as Changeworks Resources for Life.

2008

Home Energy Scotland advice centres in the South East and Highlands and Islands are set up and funded by the Scottish Government. These remain in place today.

2009–2010

Changeworks becomes a key partner for local authorities in delivering the Scottish Government’s Universal Home Insulation Scheme (UHIS).

2013

Changeworks become part of a consortium, led by the Energy Saving Trust, which delivers Local Energy Scotland and manages the Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES).

2014

Working with six local authorities, Changeworks starts delivering the Scottish Government’s £60 million Home Energy Efficiency Programmes for Scotland: Area Based Schemes (HEEPS: ABS).

2015

Changeworks, Energy Saving Trust and Everwarm set up Warmworks Scotland to deliver Warmer Homes Scotland, the Scottish Government’s £224 million fuel poverty scheme.

2017

Our business recycling joint-venture, Changeworks Recycling, receives a Royal Warrant for services to the Palace of Holyrood and welcome new co-owner, Forbes Connor.

2022

Changeworks launches a new and exciting three-year strategic plan, focussed solely on the decarbonisation of Scotland’s homes.

2023

Changeworks becomes one of the first social enterprises in Scotland to lead the exit of a joint venture and make a profit when it sells its share of Changeworks Recycling (now Change Waste Recycling) to Forbes Connor.
