Winter Fuel Payment
The Winter Fuel Payment is now called Pension Age Winter Heating Payments. It’s an annual grant of £100, £200 or £300 to help pensioners with the cost of energy.
The Scottish Government recently announced changes to this scheme for winter 2025/26. All pensioner households in Scotland should get a Winter Fuel/Pension Age Winter Heating Payment for winter 2025/26.
Those who receive Pension Credit will get a bigger payment, so Changeworks recommends checking whether you are eligible for pension credit or any other benefits. According to Age UK, more than a third of people who are entitled to pension credit do not receive it.
Winter Fuel Payment
The Winter Fuel Payment in Scotland is an annual payment of £100, £200 or £300 to help pensioners with the cost of energy.
If you are old enough to get the state pension, you should be eligible. The amount you can get depends on your circumstances.
Winter Fuel Payment 2025/26
In Scotland, Winter Fuel Payment is now called Pension Age Winter Heating Payments. Every pensioner household should get a payment for winter 2025/26.
How do I qualify for Winter Fuel Payment 2025?
All pensioner households in Scotland should qualify for Winter Fuel/Pension Age Winter Heating Payments. This is different to the previous year, when you had to get pension credit or another qualifying benefit.
How much is the Winter Fuel Payment 2025?
Payments are £100, £200 or £300, depending on your circumstances.
If you don’t receive pension credit or another qualifying benefit, the payment will be £100.
If you receive pension credit or another qualifying benefit, the payment will be £200 or £300, depending on your age.
The government hasn’t yet confirmed what the other qualifying benefits are, nor the age limits. We’ll update this information as soon as we know more.
In the meantime, Changeworks recommends checking whether you are eligible for pension credit or any other benefits.
How do I get Winter Fuel Payment in 2025?
The Winter Fuel Payment will be paid by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). It should be paid automatically into your account if you are of pensionable age.
When will the Winter Fuel Payment 2025 be made?
If you are eligible you should get the payment automatically and do not need to apply. You will receive a letter to confirm your payment from November 2025.
Social Security Scotland will send the payment to the same account as your State Pension, or any Social Security Scotland benefits you get.
