As of 20th October 2014 you will be charged at least 5p for all carrier bags, including paper and plastic bags, in all Scottish shops. That includes everything from supermarkets to takeaways to clothes stores. Some small businesses (like local butchers) are exempt from this.
To help you save your pennies remember to take your own bags with you whenever you shop. This could be a supermarket ‘bag for life’, a fold-up cloth bag ( see Onya Bags in the Changeworks Shop) or a basic carrier bag you are reusing. Try keeping bags handy by the front door, in your desk drawer, folded up in your handbag or in the back of the car so that you don’t forget them on your next shopping trip.
