Changeworks and our Affordable Warmth Services team work with householders to enable them to live in warm, dry homes and make low carbon living a positive reality.

Our impact report 2020-21 highlights positive changes we have made: good news for the people we support, and for our partners and grant funders who help us change lives.

Navigating difficult and complex cases

Over the year our team worked with 2,276 people, many of whom were experiencing complex issues regarding their energy and who were often living in challenging situations. Despite COVID-19 restrictions we consistently delivered good outcomes, and left householders more confident in managing their heating and electricity after our help.

Unprecedented demand

Demand for support for crisis energy issues rose by 900 per cent in 2020-21, with an 85 per cent increase in energy debt cases. The people we worked with benefited from in-depth support from our advisors resulting in income and cost savings of £531,100 and over 66 tonnes of carbon savings achieved.

Reaching those who need us most

Our services are about reaching those most in need, and 62 per cent of the householders we worked with live in areas with high income deprivation. Half of the people we supported also had at least one vulnerability, such as low income or a long-term illness.

Don’t just take our word for it though – hear from those we’ve helped about what a difference it made:

“I was very stressed. Very unstable at the time, very emotional. Changeworks’ Advisor was very patient and supportive. I was impressed by his calmness. He worked relentlessly and we got the result I needed in the end. I am incredibly thankful.”

“Liam was fantastic. He worked with me and my Housing Association to get my gas uncapped. He also helped me apply for the Warm Home Discount which I hadn’t heard about! I’m now comfortable topping my meter up and am properly warm for the first time in three years.”

Our work doesn’t stop

Collaboration with our partners and funders helps us to bring about positive change and tackle fuel poverty. The continuing impact of COVID-19, rising fuel prices and supporting home decarbonisation energy projects means our support is needed more than ever, and will ensure our Affordable Warmth Services team is kept busy in the coming year.
