We’re so proud of Don for received an ‘Inspiring Volunteering’ award from the Lord Provost, pictured below, highlighting the important contribution volunteers make to Changeworks.

Don has been a Heat Heroes volunteer since the beginning of the project. Ever reliable and always keen to take on new clients, Don is an enthusiastic and passionate member of the Heat Heroes team. He and the rest of the Heat Heroes volunteers give up their time to give essential energy advice and support to people aged over 65 in Edinburgh who are struggling to stay warm and comfortable in their homes at an affordable cost. This is a great service which aids our clients’ comfort and health. Well done Don!!

Our Drew attended the awards ceremony with Don last week and took the opportunity to get some soundbites from Don on what motivates him to volunteer, along with some of his other interests and observations:

So, what do you like about being a volunteer with Changeworks?

It is a very positive experience – working with the staff whilst doing something I hope is useful.

What do volunteers do for Changeworks?

Enable Changeworks to be in contact with a much greater number of people.

When did you first hear about Changeworks?

From a variety of places – some years ago.  I attend Central Edinburgh Quakers and the Meeting House uses Changeworks Recycling’s services.

What else do you like to do in your spare time?

I focus on all things sustainable.  At this time of year I really enjoy cycling.

Favourite film, band, podcast, book and website?

I will watch a James Bond film repeatedly – especially with Sean Connery or Pierce Brosman.

Where would you most like to go in the British Isles and why?

I am a member of the Iona Community and I get to Iona as often as is convenient – either as a guest or to work.

Which of the Changeworks values (passion, integrity, innovation, collaboration and empowerment) do you most identify with and why?

I really can't identify with one more than another – they are all so important!

What makes you smile?

Enjoying an evening with friends.

What’s your wish for Changeworks?

Keep doing what you're doing.

A message for Changeworks’ staff and volunteers?

Be positive in all you do.
