From 2017 to 2020, Changeworks delivered Change Works in Peebles, a community based support service to help local people in Peebles and wider Tweeddale improve the energy efficiency of their homes and businesses under the Energy Efficient Scotland programme.
Peebles was identified as a high energy area, spending approximately 14 per cent more on their energy bills than the national average.
The project helped people like Mr McCurdy, who cut his heating bills by 20 per cent when the team helped him install renewable technologies in his home, and Robin from Peebles who replaced his old inefficient boiler and draught-proofed his home. That made his home warmer, and cheaper to heat.
The project was a real team effort, with contributions from our partners Home Energy Scotland, Resource Efficient Scotland and Changeworks own Quality Assurance team. Local partnerships were key to the success, and the project created a guide to trusted local contractors to help householders make the right decisions for their home.
The project delivered a comprehensive programme of public engagement and support, covering low carbon behaviours and low-cost energy saving. This included specialist talks, learning activities, and outreach events to promote energy efficiency and warmth.
Morag Cockburn, Senior Project Officer for Change Works in Peebles, said:
“The project was such a success thanks to the great response received from communities across Tweeddale. Individuals, groups and businesses showed a real appetite for change and will hopefully continue on their drive to reduce energy bills and CO2.”
Over the course of the project, 46 measures were installed in 39 households, as well as five measures in four businesses, ranging from external wall insulation to solar panels. This resulted in over £200,000 of private investment and 1,008 tonnes of lifetime carbon savings.
When the project ended, a further 174 measures were being explored by households and businesses with the potential to generate £669,280 in investment and 3,522 tonnes/C02 lifetime carbon savings.
