Local project Change Works in Peebles is launching the Peebles Energy Challenge, offering 100 householders the opportunity to take part and reduce their energy use and bills by installing a real-time energy monitoring system. This system will be provided for free to help track electricity and gas use in the home, reduce energy costs and cut carbon emissions.

Those volunteering to take part in the challenge will receive regular hints and tips on simple ways to save energy in the home and reduce energy bills.

Donna Marshall, Change Works in Peebles Project Manager said: “Peebles Energy Challenge is about community action on energy awareness to help cut energy consumption in the town over the next year. The energy monitoring system that we will be providing free to local households will provide real-time information on the energy you are using in your home and how much it is costing you. The monitoring system can typically help householders to save an average of £250 per annum on their bills by reducing their energy use by up to 10%. Simple changes to our daily habits can help avoid wasting energy and money.”

The Change Works in Peebles Energy Challenge is part-funded by Scottish Government and was developed by Changeworks in partnership with Scottish Borders Council. It aims to reduce the amount of energy used by households in and around Peebles.

Councillor Gordon Edgar, Scottish Borders Council’s Energy Efficiency Champion, said: “This project provides a real opportunity for local people to save money, improve buildings and reduce carbon emissions.

“The scheme is part of efforts by the Council to reduce its carbon footprint, alongside other energy saving projects such as the LED streetlighting scheme, the increased number of electric vehicle charging points and the installation of solar panels on 12 Council properties this summer, including Kingsland and Priorsford primary schools in Peebles.”
