Tip of the day

Why not ask around to see if you can borrow something you need from a friend rather than buying it. E.g. ladders, hedge clippers. Or try www.ecomodo.com - save money, time and space by borrowing stuff you don't use often or lend stuff for free, make money for yourself or fundraise for charity.

TECHNICAL GUIDES FOR ENERGY IMPROVEMENTS

Over the last few years, Changeworks has been involved in several groundbreaking and award-winning projects to increase energy efficiency in older and historic properties without compromising their appearance or original fabric.

From each of these projects we have taken all the lessons learned and put them together in comprehensive good practice guides to inform future projects throughout the UK. These guides also provide residents and business owners of traditional and historic homes with the information they need to make them more energy efficient in an acceptable way.

Energy Heritage project

This project demonstrated how to reduce energy consumptions and CO2 emissions in older and historic properties.

   Renewable Heritage

This award-winning project built on the success of the Energy Heritage project and introduced clean energy technologies, such as solar panels, into traditionally-built, listed properties in Edinburgh's Old Town.

Tenements Project

This project aims to help owners and renters in hard-to-treat tenemental properties across the City to improve the energy efficiency of the whole stair and to reduce their risk of 'fuel poverty'.  We have put together six fact sheets to offer guidance to residents on how to improve the energy efficiency of traditional stone-built tenements.

Tenement Fact Sheet 1: Loft insulation, draughtproofing of stair doors and windows, adding a draught lobby door
Tenement Fact Sheet 2: Draughtproofing of doors and windows and between floorboards; secondary and double glazing
Tenement Fact Sheet 3:
Solid wall insulation and under floor insulation for ground floor flats
Tenement Fact Sheet 4: Selecting an appropriate heating system and heating controls
Tenement Fact Sheet 5: General information on energy efficiency improvements in tenements
Tenement Fact Sheet 6: Solar water heating, photovoltaics, heat recovery ventilation, domestic wind turbines, ground and air source heat pumps and community energy solutions
