Definition: to use again, instead of throwing away
Reuse: Paper
- In school keep a tray for one-sided paper to reuse.
- Ask your teacher to photocopy on both sides of the paper.
Reuse: Plastic
- Every week in Edinburgh and East Lothian, we use millions of plastic bags.
- In Ireland, the government have put an environmental tax of 15 cent (about 10 pence) on plastic carrier bags. This has cut down on litter and encouraged people to reuse their bags.
- Plastic takes over 500 years to biodegrade (rot away) when it is thrown in a landfill site.
- Try and reuse plastic bags when you go shopping.
- Use a plastic bottle for juice or water instead of buying a new container every day.
- See how much plastic wrappings and bottles you would save in one week, then try to imagine how much that would amount to over one year!
Reuse: Glass
- Try to buy deposit and return bottles. These are washed and reused rather than recycled, so are even better for the environment.
- Reuse bottles and jars as storage containers, or paint them to use as vases or funky pencil holders.
