Definition: to use less, to cut down on the amount of rubbish created.
Every household produces over a tonne of rubbish per year.
The easiest way to minimise waste is to avoid creating it in the first place.
If we think a little bit more about the amount of waste we produce, every time we go shopping we can help to cut down on unnecessary rubbish.
At the shops
- Take your own bags, (plastic or material) to carry shopping home in. Don't use new bags every time.
- Buy loose goods, for example fruit and vegetables with little or no packaging.
- Avoid individually wrapped items and buy bigger boxes instead, for example a big box of cereal instead of individual portions.
At school
- Think about the packaging used in your lunch and try to prepare a waste free lunch at least one day a week. For example, put your sandwiches into a tub rather than wrapping them in foil or clingfilm, bring a drink in a reusable bottle and choose fruit instead of a packet of crisps.
- Make double-sided photocopies where possible.
- Try and keep electronic copies of files instead of printing everything out.
