THE WASTE WISE ARMADALE PROJECT

A better environment, a better future

The Waste Wise Armadale Project is a new and exciting waste prevention project, which focused on the community of Armadale in West Lothian.

Working in partnership with West Lothian Council, The Waste Wise Armadale Project decreased the amount of waste each household produces, so that families, businesses and the local community can benefit from a better environment and a better future.

An independent evaluation of the project, carried out by SISTech showed that overall waste arisings decreased by 6.1% where the community was engaged through door-step conversations.

Full details about the project can be found by downloading a copy of the Final Report and Project Evaluation.

So what was it all about?

A strong, caring community:

  • Decreasing the amount of waste we produce – by getting as good at reducing and reusing as we are at recycling
  • Working together to change our behaviour towards waste
  • Increasing our recycling rates even further by continuing to use our three-bin recycling scheme
  • Building on the progress our schools have made in the Eco Schools programme
  • Giving people more skills and knowledge to become a leading community in Scotland on waste prevention
  • Bringing together volunteers and waste experts at home, at work and in the community to make a real difference

A little from you will be a lot for Armadale.

The Waste Wise Armadale Project provided waste prevention opportunities for over 4,000 households in Armadale. It linked with and promoted existing initiatives such as The Real Nappy Project and home composting schemes, as well as tackling new issues, such as excessive food waste.

The key feature of the Project was the use of doorstep conversations between over 1,000 householders and trained volunteers. These ‘soft interventions’ connected waste prevention opportunities to the householder’s values and interests to encourage action. A toolkit of materials, including a dedicated key resource, supported these conversations.
